Authorities say a 12-year-old boy, fearing for his mother's life, stabbed a man four times in the back Monday morning after the man fired multiple gunshot rounds into the floor of a Sugar Island home.

According to a news release from Chippewa County Sheriff Michael Bitnar, deputies were called at midnight Monday to a report of domestic violence involving shots fired and a stabbing at a home on Lake George Road, just south of E. Bailey Road, on Sugar Island.

Bitnar says the suspect fired multiple rounds into the floor during a domestic assault. After the 12-year-old boy stabbed the suspect, the suspect ran out of the house looking for the boy. The mother and the son ran out the back door to escape.

Evidence on scene suggests the suspect fired multiple rounds in their direction as they ran from the house toward the St. Mary's River, Bitnar says.

Responding officers located the mother and the son, and Bitnar says the are both safe.

After several hours, a male suspect was taken into custody. He was taken to the hospital to be treated for his stab wounds. The suspect will remain in the custody of the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office while the investigation continues.

Bitnar says the man's name will be released after he is arraigned in court.

Investigators are requesting multiple felony charges against the man, including felonious assault, aggravated domestic assault, reckless discharge of a firearm and felony firearm possession.

U.S. Border Patrol, Michigan State Police, the Chippewa County Sheriff's Office, Chippewa County Central Dispatch and Sugar Island EMS were all on scene.

Sugar Island is in the St. Mary's River between the U.S. and Ontario.
