MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The second annual ‘Sidewalk Chalk Poetry Contest’ took place on Tuesday afternoon in Marquette.
Poets of all ages from preschool up to adult were invited to the steps of the Peter White Public Library, where they wrote out their poems and drew pictures in chalk on the steps.
According to the U.P. Poet Laureate, Martin Achatz, the contest is separated into five different age groups.
"The challenge is for poets to come and they have a theme, it's the forest and they have to come write a ten line poem, no longer than ten lines,” said Achatz. “Then the judges go through and they pick out the winner at the end of the event.”
The awards were followed by a poetry reading and open mic session with all the judges.
This free event is part of the 2019 City of Marquette Art Week.
