Schoolcraft County jail millage fails to pass

MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WLUC) - Schoolcraft County leaders are discussing what to do next, after voters narrowly rejected a jail proposal yesterday.

Schoolcraft County residents were asked to approve three mills for 20 years to pay for the cost of transforming the old Manistique armory into the county jail but the proposal was defeated by 108 votes.

Undersheriff Darrell Dixson says two new county commissioners were elected yesterday, so he'll be meeting with them soon to talk about their options.

The current building is more than 60 years old and no longer meets department of corrections standards to continue operating.
