"The U.P. always sticks together, we get things done and we're emotional about this because it effects everybody's lives and our community," said Representative Scott Dianda of the 110th House District.
The decision of the Michigan Department of Corrections to close the Ojibway Correctional Facility is one some officials are saying would bring devastation to the Upper Peninsula. Now concerned citizens are doing what they can to make sure the closure doesn't happen.
"We are going to make sure that it's loud and clear for the governor and the Department of Corrections that they did the wrong thing by closing this facility," said Representative Dianda.
"It would mean that they're taking jobs that are absolutely necessary for this community and they're actually tearing homes apart and they're causing people to uproot from their hometowns," said Crystal Suzik, one of the organizers of the 'Save Our Communities' spaghetti fundraiser dinner.
Marensico Township has already retained an attorney to file for an injunction against the closure of OCF but legal fees could cost up to $50,000. 'Save our Communities' hosted a spaghetti dinner fundraiser, with 100% of the money earned going toward legal costs.
"This is an injustice that we're facing and we need to start standing up for ourselves," said Suzik.
$10,000 have already been raised through the township's local defense fund. On Friday, September 14 the township's attorney was able to file the necessary paperwork for the injunction.
"It tells the governor the devastation it is going to cost to not just this area but to the entire peninsula," said Representative Dianda.
"I believe a judge is going to see where the injustice has lied and he is going to definitely be on our side," said Suzik.
'Save our Communities' says they're not finished fighting the closure of the Ojibway Correctional Facility. If you would like to donate to the legal fund you can send cash or checks made out to 'Save Our Communities' to the following address:
