Sauna, eh? UP workshop postponed due to visa problems

CALUMET, Mich. (AP) - A workshop to demonstrate a popular form of Finnish culture has been postponed in the Upper Peninsula, apparently because of government red tape.

The Finnish American Folk School had planned to hold a September workshop on making log saunas. But the school says presenters coming from Europe have experienced delays in getting visas approved by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

School director Jim Kurtti says the men wouldn't arrive on time even if their applications were suddenly approved. Instead, they're expected to visit Calumet in May to show people how to build a traditional log sauna with a wood-fired stove. Finnish immigrants settled in the Upper Peninsula in the 1800s.

The Mining Gazette reports that people from as far as Ohio had signed up for the workshop.
