HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - Racers from across the country gathered in the Keweenaw Friday for the start of the 25th Lake Superior Performance Rally.
The rally began Friday afternoon with the first cars taking off in Houghton.
A rally car race is when drivers take street-legal cars and make special safety modifications like adding a cage. They'll then race down county roads and backroads for the best race time.
Spectators gathered in the area to see the action up close.
“It’s always really cool seeing all these sweet cars on Youtube and stuff. I’ve been watching a few videos leading up to this so it’s been really cool to meet these guys and see their cars in real life," said Matthew Hewett, a first time spectator.
The rally continues Saturday in L'Anse at the Waterfront Park beginning at 9 a.m.
Next year, the performance rally is scheduled for October 16 and 17.
