Preparing for the annual Big Bay Relay

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The 43rd annual Big Bay Relay is set for this Saturday and runners picked up their registration packets on Friday evening at Queen City Running ahead of the big race.

The Big Bay Relay begins in Marquette and ends at the Thunder Bay Inn, in Big Bay.

Teams of five runners each participate in a relay style race, where they are handing off a baton around every mile.

This year more than 45 teams are signed up, made up of 225 people.

The Big Bay Relay Race Director Brent Skaw says the rainy weather is not going to stop this annual tradition.

"We're going to be running rain or shine, so runners are going to be prepared for the elements. We're Yoopers so we're tough, a little rain is not going to melt us,” says Skaw. “If there is lightning then we will for safety sake, we will back off. We will be running rain or shine tomorrow."

People are welcome to come cheer on the runners at 8 a.m. at the Kaufman Sports Complex.

Organizers are asking anyone driving on the 550 tomorrow to be cautious of the runners on the road.
