UPDATE: New details on fatal shooting incident involving deputy

UPDATE: According to Marquette County Sheriff Mike Lovelace the incident in Ishpeming Township Thursday morning involved a deputy fatally shooting an individual.

The sheriff's office reports that the deputy was dispatched to a residence in Ishpeming Township after receiving a report that an individual had called UP Health System Marquette to say that he was in severe pain and was going to take his own life. Upon arriving at the scene, the deputy was confronted by an elderly male subject was was said to be agitated and confrontational.

The deputy attempted to calm the situation by engaging in conversation with the subject, but the individual leveled a shotgun at the deputy. After unsucessfully pleading with the individual to put the weapon down, the deputy discharged his weapon at the individual and immediately requested an ambulance. The subject was transported to UP Health System Marquette where he was later pronounced dead.

The investigation will be turned over to the Michigan State Police Negaunee Post and reviewed by the Marquette County Prosecutor's Office once the investigation is complete. The sheriff's office will conduct the administrative review of the incident according to the sheriff's office policy regarding legal use of force.

Names of the deceased and the involved deputy are withheld pending notifications to the family and review by the prosecuting attorney.

Law enforcement is currently responding to an incident on the corner of Silver St. and Center St. in Ishpeming Township.

TV6 Reporter Ansley Watson is on scene. Few details are being released at this time, but one person was seen taken out of the home by stretcher. CPR was in progress. The person was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
