MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - As of noon Thursday, the Marquette area is experiencing extremely hazardous road conditions due to lake effect snow.

The Marquette City Police Department is encouraging people to avoid driving unless absolutely necessary, as road conditions are extremely snow covered and slippery. Police say the Marquette Department of Public Works is doing its diligence to clear roads and make them safe for travel.

Police say please use extreme caution and allow for additional travel time if you need to venture out into the storm.

Marquette County is under a Winter Storm Warning until 10:00 p.m. Thursday.

Northern Michigan University closed at 1:00 p.m.

North Star Montessori Academy dismissed early at 1:00 p.m.

Marquette Area Public Schools had a previously-scheduled half day of classes, but said return buses were running late due to snow-covered roads.
