One seriously injured in Portage Township crash between pick-up, dump trucks

PORTAGE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - The Houghton County Sheriff's Office investigated a two-vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon.

Officers were called to the intersection of Superior Road and Elsie Road in Portage Township at 2:30 p.m. for the report of a pick-up truck and dump truck collision.

According to the sheriff's office, Trent Nordstrom, 17, of Baltic, was driving a 1993 Chevy pick-up truck on Elsie Road when he failed to yield at the intersection. A Bacco Construction dump truck with a pup-trailer, driven by Tom St. Pierre, 57, of Manistique, was traveling southbound on Superior Road and was unable to avoid hitting Nordstrom's truck.

Nordstrom's truck was pushed into the northbound ditch and snowbank area, causing serious damage to the pick-up truck's driver's side.

Nordstrom was trapped in his truck, and had to be extricated by the Hurontown Fire Department's Jaws of Life.

Adams Township First Responders treated Nordstrom at the scene, before he was transported by Mercy Ambulance to U.P. Health System-Portage in Hancock for serious injuries. His current condition has not been released.

The sheriff's office did not release details on St. Pierre's condition.

Alcohol and speed are not believed to be factors in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.

The Houghton County Sheriff's Office was assisted by Houghton City Police, Michigan State Police, Adams Township First Responders, Mercy Ambulance, Hurontown Fire Department, and Superior Service Towing.
