ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - The Northern Lights YMCA in Escanaba is expanding to additional property in the area.
On Monday evening, the YMCA offered the Escanaba School Board $150,000 to purchase the former Wells Elementary School.
The board accepted the bid since the building had been vacant for a long time. School officials say they're happy to know the former school will be put to good use.
"One thing that it means is that a building in a neighborhood that had been formerly unused is now going to be used, and there's going to be a lot of young kids and professionals working in that building, and so it's going to add something back to that neighborhood that hasn't been there for some time,” said Escanaba Schools Superintendent Coby Fletcher.
Now the board has accepted the bid, they will move onto completing all necessary paperwork to ensure a smooth transition.
