MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - North Star Montessori Academy is calling for volunteers to help with Northern Michigan University’s Cat Packs program.

This is a Salvation Army project supported by Northern Michigan University. Their mission is to reduce students' hunger in the Marquette area during weekends and holidays of the academic school year.

Currently, North Star Academy supports more than half of its students through these meals. The school would like to continue doing this, and is asking the community to help serve or provide donations.

"This helps to ensure that the kids are fed on the weekend when they may not have access to meals at school, but it also helps to build that connection with families. We want to support all of our families in every area we can,” said Andrea Ballard, the Superintendent and Principal of North Star Montessori Academy.

Packing takes place on Wednesdays at the Salvation Army in Marquette. If you're interested in volunteering, contact

North Star Montessori Academy also is having a cookie fundraiser, which will take place this year at the TV6 Craft Show in December.
