Thursday was Veterans Day at the U.P. State Fair, and that meant, the awarding of Upper Peninsula Veteran of the Year.

This year, the honor went to Bernard Stanaway Jr, post commander of Negaunee VFW post 3165. Stanaway served in the Marine Corps, and for years has helped not only his VFW post, but at the Jacobetti Home for Veterans, and others in the community.

As part of the honor, Stanaway received a green jacket, a special Veteran of the Year cap, and plenty of plaques and certificates.

“It's very humbling, and very rewarding to get this,” said Stanaway. “I don't do what I do because I want accolades. I do it because I see a need and I fill it. It's just who I am.”

In addition to the honors received at the fair, Congressman Jack Bergman had Stanaway's honor read into the Congressional Record last week, so the achievement will be known forever.
