NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WLUC) - Friday night before a big basketball game between cross-town rivals, local veterans were honored. Prior to the Negaunee vs Ishpeming boys basketball game, dozens of veterans were recognized as they entered the gymnasium in Negaunee.

The band played the songs for each branch of the service and displayed an empty seat for those missing in action. Negaunee's Superintendent says it's important for the students to see this type of tribute.

"I think it's super important for the community to see all the veterans that we have living here and the sacrifices they made in their youth and giving us the opportunities that we have today," said Negaunee Superintendent, Dan Skewis. "I'm looking forward to our high school students reaction to the amount of veterans that we have attending tonight because that's a special thing for them to see."

After the short ceremony the players for both teams shook hands with and thanked the veterans for their service.
