Negaunee schools honor local veterans

NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WLUC) - Before Wednesday night's boys basketball game between the Negaunee Miners and the Westwood Patriots, local veterans were honored during a special ceremony. Dozens of veterans were recognized as they entered the gymnasium in Negaunee.

The band played the songs for each branch of the service and displayed an empty seat for those missing in action. Negaunee's Superintendent, Dan Skewis, says it's important for the students to see this type of tribute.

"The reason we do it is for our students to see how many veterans we have in our community and to make sure that our veterans understand how much they are appreciated not only by our school system but also by the community in general and this is a great way for the school and the community to come together to honor people who definitely deserve that honor," Skewis said.

This is an annual event for Negaunee, they usually try to do it during a game against nearby schools. Last year it was before a game against another cross-town rival, Ishpeming.
