Negaunee Township denies request for blasting at gravel pit

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - The Negaunee Township Planning Commission has denied a request to allow blasting at a gravel pit on County Road 510. It happened Tuesday night during a meeting.

Kona Ridge Mining requested a permit from the township, seeking an expansion to their operations. They currently extract and crush gravel. The blasting would occur on adjacent parcels that are phases 7 through 9 for the company and would happen during the summer months.

Township officials say they wanted a study done first.

"We've had numerous people at several open meetings that we've had, that have been asking questions that we could not answer, so we asked to have a study done in accordance with the ordinance for Negaunee Township. The applicant decided that they did not want to pay for that study. Them not wanting to pay for the study negates the application," said Negaunee Township Supervisor, Gary Wommer.

The next step for the issue is unknown at this point. We will continue to follow this story and give you the latest as it happens.
