NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WLUC)- The Negaunee City Council has unanimously passed an ordinance allowing recreational marijuana within the city limits.
A public hearing also took place during the City Council meeting on Thursday night, where several citizens voiced their concerns about the ordinance, with some worried the city was rushing this along.
Council members responded that they wanted to make sure Negaunee has regulations in place before Dec. 1, when recreational marijuana is allowed to come in.
Officials also assured residents that these businesses would only be allowed in industrial zones.
"There are complications that come along with this, there is uncharted territory as it pertains to state law, so right now we have a lot of regulations going in place, emergency regulations by the state,” said Nate Heffron, City Manager of Negaunee. “And we believe that there will be some changes probably within the next several years, so we want to take a cautious approach while also respecting the voters in the state of Michigan."
Heffron also said they are currently looking at industrial zones around the southern portion of the community.
