Northern Michigan University held the grand opening Thursday night for the new Beaumier Alumni Welcome and U.P. Heritage Center.

The center has two main purposes - it serves as a place to welcome visitors to campus, and it's also a museum where people can learn about the university and the history of the Upper Peninsula. It was built thanks to a generous gift by alumnus Dr. John Beaumier. N.M.U. President Fritz Erickson says the center is an extension of what Dr. Beaumier was all about.

"This center is all about connections," Erickson said. "Connecting our faculty, staff and students, alumni and community all together, and this gracious gift of Dr. Beaumier, who exemplifies connections, it's just a wonderful addition to our campus."

Beaumier made the donation that made the center possible last Fall, and construction began immediately. Dr. Erickson says it's an exciting week on the campus with the center opening just 2 days before graduation.
