NMU Allies and the Ore Dock host first ever 'MQT Comes Out 2019'

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC)- NMU Allies partnered with the Ore Dock Brewing Company, to host the first ever ‘MQT Comes Out 2019’ event on Friday evening.

The celebration was for National Coming Out Day for the LGBTQIA spectrum and allies.

The event included informational booths and even an open mic where guests were encouraged to tell their coming out stories.

Organizers believe these events are important to remind people who might be struggling with their own identities, that they are not alone.

"When life is happening, it kind of feels like you can't express who you are or maybe there is not a voice to listen or anyone who cares and I want people who feel like that, because I have felt like that before, to know that there is actually a massive community of people not just in Marquette but the greater UP who care about you and want you to be here and be who you are,” said Sarah Schollmeyer, Co-coordinator of ‘MQT Comes Out.’

A singer and songwriter from Negaunee, Hunter Wade, also performed at the event on Friday evening.
