As of last week, Michigan is only behind Georgia, which has around 8 percent experiencing symptoms.

While most of cases are located in the Lower Peninsula, hospitals in the U.P. have been noticing a recent increase in flu cases.

"We are seeing an increase increase of the flu in our area, so it's extra important to wash your hands and stay home if you're sick," said Casey Baird, the Director of Quality and Infection Prevention at UP Health System-Portage. "Nationwide they're also seeing an increase hospitalization due to the flu."

In the midst of the flu season, health officials are reminding people to get their flu shots if they haven't already done so.
