MICHIGAMME, Mich. (WLUC) - It all started with Interlochen State Park. That state park was the first to open up and it happened 100 years ago. State parks across Michigan will be celebrating the centennial with events throughout the year.

Van Riper State Park will celebrate in August as part of their Meteors and S'mores event. There are 103 parks in Michigan and staff at the parks say this is the year to get out and enjoy them.

"Everyone should come out, hike a trail, camp, use our day use area, see our beautiful beach, every state park whether it's McLain State Park or Wilderness State Park," said Van Riper State Park Accounting Assistant, Melanie Brand. "We want everyone in Michigan to visit a state park this year. Put it on your bucket list."
