MUNISING, Mich. (WLUC) - The Michigan Ice Fest continues its 29th anniversary celebration with over 1,100 registered attendees.
Held along the scenic shores of Lake Superior in the Pictured Rocks National Park, Ice Fest offers group climbs, gear demos, presentations, and socials happening February 12 through 16, 2020.
Michigan Ice Fest Organizer Bill Thompson encourages anyone interested in ice climbing regardless of skill or ability to come check out this weekend's event. Thompson said he’s excited to see the increase in diversity of the sport over the last three decades.
“Back in the day when it was forty people, it was all male. Now it’s fifty-fifty male female and that was pretty exciting for a lot of people,” said Thompson. “We are getting younger kids, we’re getting a lot of diversity involved, so it’s been exciting to see all those changes.”
All equipment and instruction for ice climbing the shores of Lake Superior is provided at the Michigan Ice Fest.
