MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - The land development code was passed in the city of Marquette at Monday’s meeting. City officials say this is the first major code update the city of Marquette has had in nearly 40 years.
"This is a [most] significant update to the biggest update to our land-use standards in decades,” said Marquette City Planner David Stensaas.
"This was a huge undertaking, 18 months of work, by the city staff and others, and it was dearly needed,” said Marquette City Manager Mike Angeli.
Included in the new code are four new zoning districts as well as the elimination of one of the code districts that wasn’t working well. The new code will also feature a special website where people can put their address in and learn the zoning standards for their property.
"Right away, this is going to make it possible for people to do things they would've needed a variance for or not been able to afford to do because the variance process is complex and expensive,” said Stensaas.
The land development code has been created to modernize the city's land-uses codes for zoning, signs and land division to help evolve the city in a sustainable way. This will create more flexibility, protect the natural resources and create a better quality of life for its residents.
Along with this, city officials say the code will reduce lot size standards for residential lots, parking standards for retail and office uses and allow for accessory dwelling units. It will even make sign standards more liberal for businesses.
"From my point of view, I'm very happy with the way it turned out,” said Angeli. “I'm glad it's over with, I'm pleased that the commission approved it, and I want to thank the planning commission especially for putting in the time and effort to address this situation."
The land development code will go into effect in the coming weeks. In the meantime, the city planning staff welcome people to call their office for additional information.
