MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) On Tuesday night the Marquette Township Board of Trustees approved the name for a multi-use tunnel project beneath US-41.
The entrance for the underpass will be called 'Pete's Pass' after local developer Peter O'Dovero.
This $2.5 million project will connect the trail systems so snowmobilers, bikers and pedestrians can get safely from the south side to the north side of US-41. The tunnel will be located near Menards.
Marquette Township Manager Randy Girard says O'Dovero was a critical part in making the tunnel happen, which is why the board chose to name the entrance after him.
"There came a point in the tunnel project where it was questionable whether we were going to be able to come up with enough non-township funds to do it and Mr. O’Dovero stepped up with a sizable contribution to make that happen,” said Girard.
Construction on the underpass will begin in late April once the weight restrictions are lifted.
Girard is hopeful the project will be complete and open to the public by August or September.
