Marquette Senior Center kicks off Silver Sampler series

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Bitter temperatures didn't keep Marquette County residents inside Wednesday, but it did keep them from snowshoeing.

The Marquette Senior Center was supposed to snowshoe the Marquette North Trail System to kick off their Silver Sampler winter events Wednesday afternoon.

The trail ended up being too packed down, so they walked instead.

They started at the Collinsville Trailhead and hiked for about an hour.

"This was a great hike today," Program Coordinator Janet Koistenen said. "We got to see all kinds of areas that people who have lived in Marquette their whole lives have never seen. It's pretty neat."

Silver Sampler events will be going on all winter long. Koistenen said the group will meet on most Wednesdays and every other Saturday.

The free events offer opportunities for people 55 and up to snowshoe, skate and cross country ski. In the summer, there will be kayaking and hiking events.

Next Wednesday, the group will try snowshoeing again. This time they'll be on the Blueberry Ridge Trail.

The Silver Sampler events are funded through the Marquette Senior Center. Last year they were funded through a grant.

Call the Marquette Senior Center at 906-228-0456 if you're interested in signing up for a Silver Sampler event.
