The Marquette City Commission voted Monday night to approve the rezoning of a current parking lot in the downtown district.

The parking lot is located across the street from the Marquette Commons at 135 W Main Street, adjacent to Joe's Gym.

The lot was sold to the Veridea Group in July of 2018. The Veridea Group plans to build a multi-story building that will house retail and commercial space, with some residences.

Even though the property has been sold for more than a year, rezoning was necessary to start construction.

“There is a general move for people to live in the downtown area and to work downtown and this new addition will accommodate some of that, so I think this is really positive,” said Marquette City Manager Mike Angeli.

This will remove parking spots from downtown, but, the Downtown Development Authority says it is working towards a solution to fix parking issues.
