MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Marquette Alternative High School is hosting their “Rock the Socks” campaign again this year. It's an effort to bring socks to organizations in need.
Socks are often considered the most requested, but least donated clothing item at homeless shelters. “Rock the Socks” is a county-wide sock drive with drop off locations at many Marquette County schools and businesses, including Northern Michigan University.
Last year alone, the drive collected over 4,000 pairs of socks. Students and teachers say the program is growing quickly since it began in 2012.
“Please, in this season of giving, think about those who are cold,” said Cynthia DePetro, Teacher at Marquette Alternative High School. “Those who aren't comfortable asking for help. Socks are an affordable purchase so, while you're out there, please buy some socks and drop them off to one of our many sites.”
“Rock the Socks” continues until December 14. On December 15th, the NMU hockey team will host "Toss the Socks" during their game against the Ferris State Bulldogs. Spectators are encouraged to bring sock donations to throw onto the ice between the first and second periods.
“Rock the Socks” organizers are asking for new infant, youth, and adult size sock donations. Organizations receiving the socks are: St. Vincent De Paul, Janzen House, local elementary schools, The Giving Closet, Room at the Inn, The Women’s Shelter, and The Beacon House.
Drop off locations can be found at: Marquette Alternative High School, Marquette Senior High School, Bothwell, Graveraet, Cherry Creek, Sandy Knoll, MAPS Central Office, Westwood High School, Nice Community Schools, Ishpeming High School, Negaunee High School, Gilbert and Sawyer Elementary Schools in Gwinn, Northern Michigan University, School of Education and Athletic Departments, St. Christopher’s Preschool, Mister McGregor’s Garden (both locations), Profiles in Hair Design, Wattsson and Wattsson Jewelers, Select Realty, formerly UPCCU/Embers Credit Union (all 3 locations).
