UPDATE: Mackinac County deputy shoots suspect in hand, expected to be OK

The man arrested after an incident in Mackinac County Sunday evening has been arraigned in 92nd District Court.

James Avery Blevins, 39, of St. Ignace, is charged with Assault with Intent to commit Murder, Felon in Possession of a Firearm – while Intoxicated, Felon in Possession of ammunition, Dangerous Weapon possession – metallic knuckles, Assault with a dangerous weapon (Felonious Assault), Felony Firearm, and Habitual Offender - Third Offense.

Blevins is being held at the Mackinac County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

The deputies involved are on administrative leave while the final elements of the investigation are completed. The deputies are expected to return to full duty by Thursday.

When two deputies approached the home, a man appeared with a long gun and pointed it at the deputies. Strait says one of the deputies fired his weapon and hit the suspect in the hand. Strait did not give a location for the incident.

A Mackinac County Sheriff's Office deputy responding to a home Sunday evening shot a suspect in his hand.

According to Mackinac County Sheriff Scott Strait, deputies were called to a home at 6:30 p.m. Sunday to investigate a report of a felon in possession of a gun with children at the home.

When two deputies approached the home, a man appeared with a long gun and pointed it at the deputies. Strait says one of the deputies fired his weapon and hit the suspect in the hand. Strait did not give a location for the incident.

The suspect was taken to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital to be treated for injures that are not life-threatening.

Search warrants were obtained for the home and items. Strait says investigators are seeking several charges for the suspect and the investigation continues.

The Michigan State Police Crime Lab and detectives were requested to investigate the incident.

The suspect's name will not be released until formal charges are filed and he's arraigned in Mackinac County District Court.

The Mackinac County Sheriff's Office will release more information at that time, Strait said.
