SANDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - Construction is underway for the upgraded Marquette County Solid Waste Management Authority recycling system.

The $6.3 million facility makeover will transform the MCSWMA recycling center from a dual to single-system method later this year. That means residents will be able to put paper, flattened cardboard, plastic and metal in one container for weekly collection, depending on their municipality.
Construction began at the beginning of this month.
"We're going to be in construction in preparation for the equipment probably for the next four or five months,” said Bradley Austin, MCSWMA Director of Operations. “Goal right now is to have the construction of the facility done by August, at that point the equipment manufacturer will be onsite to actually install new single-stream equipment."
The single-stream recycling facility is set to open in October.
All colors of glass will also be accepted at the new facility for local re-purposing. The glass must be clean and separated from other recyclables.
