Lost woman found quickly with help of updated 911 system

AU TRAIN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - The Alger County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from a woman who was lost in a wooded area near Perch Lake in Au Train Township at about 8:30 p.m. on June 13.

61-year-old Melanie Sue Kaiser, from Ohio, advised that she was walking in the woods near Perch Lake Road when she became disoriented. Kaiser said that she was not injured, however she could not find her way back to the cabin where she was staying.

Alger County “Rescue 21” was dispatched to locate Kaiser and assist her with getting out of the woods.

In using the updated 911 system, the Alger County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center was able to obtain accurate GPS coordinates of the caller making a quick rescue possible. Kaiser was located and escorted to safety within approximately 40 minutes of the 911 call.

The Alger County Sheriff’s Office would also like to remind the public that texting 911 is a viable option if cell phone coverage is poor.
