MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - More than 100 students ditched their carpool this morning for National Walk to School Day. Bothwell Middle School has been celebrating Walk to School Day for several years now.
Groups of students gathered in four locations to walk together. They walked sown sidewalks funded by a Safe Routes to School grant initiative. School officials said turnout this year was much higher than average.
"[This] just shows that the kids are active and interested in being part of activities at school, whether they be athletics, or exercise, of like the Hockeyville yesterday that went so well," said Assistant Principal, Zack Sedgwick.
To promote healthy eating as part of a healthy, active lifestyle, the school gave out apples and bottled water. Students who walked to school also got a gold card, which enters them into periodic raffles.
