MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC)- Thursday is Flag Day in the United States and one local organization threw a special party to celebrate Wednesday. The Lake Superior Village Youth and Family Center was throwing their annual HUD Strong Families event.
Festivities included a barbecue, bounce houses and pony rides for the kids. A member of the local V.F.W. post was also on hand to perform a flag changing ceremony. The event is organized by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and focuses on health, education and economic development.
“The goal of this event is to bring families together and to recognize how important it is to have moms, dads and all the kids working together and playing together,” said Sharon Maki, Executive Director of the Marquette Housing Commission. “We all know that a family is made of a strong group of people that all love each other and have an opportunity to play together. We can all enjoy this environment that we're lucky enough to have on this gorgeous day.”
Sponsors for today's event include Michigan Works, Econofoods, Super One and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
