MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - Rock salt is a common option used to melt ice on driveways and sidewalks, but some of those products might not be safe for pets.

Mares-Z-Doats in Marquette offers an alternative ice melt product called Paw Thaw. It uses biodegradable products that are safe for animals. Most conventional ice melt products use sodium chloride and calcium chloride.

Although these products are more cost-effective, they can harm dogs when ingested, and can possibly even burn their paws.

While these pet-safe ice melts have been an option for a few years, many people might not be aware of the dangers.

"Just to create awareness and then give options where if they have a controlled environment where they can have their dog, they can use a pet friendly ice melt if they choose. Or, use a conventional ice melter and protect the dog's paws on their own," said Mares-Z-Doats Store Manager, Andrew Hallinen.

Paw Thaw, and more common ice melt products, can be found at Mares-Z-Doats, located at 1400 Division Street in Marquette.
