Joe Shawhan named MTU hockey head coach

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) - Joe Shawhan has been promoted to head coach of the Michigan Tech hockey team, the university announced Tuesday morning.

Shawhan was an assistant coach at MTU for the past three seasons. Shawhan replaces Mel Pearson, who left MTU to become the head coach at the University of Michigan. Shawhan is the 22nd head coach in MTU hockey history.

The Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, native holds a bachelor's degree from Northern Michigan in technical and applied sciences. He and his wife, Laura, have three children, Mia, Jordan and Rachel.

Shawhan was an assistant coach at NMU for six season before joining the MTU staff in 2014.
