MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - UPDATE - Jamie Tasson, the woman accused of embezzling a quarter million dollars from Doctor Heidi Johnson, affirmed her plea Thursday January 18 in Marquette County Circuit Court.
Victim Dr. Johnson disagreed with the original deal which did not include jail time, at the original sentencing last Friday, and sentencing was postponed until Thursday, January 18.
Because the court chose not to sentence based on the original deal, Tasson was allowed to change her mind.
Jamie Tasson pleaded guilty to embezzling over $250,000 from Dr. Heidi Johnson, owner of Superior Eye Health and Vision Therapy Center.
"Because the court will not sentence in accordance with the agreement, you have the opportunity to either withdraw your plea and basically start over, or affirm your plea and accept the sentence, your attorney has indicated that you want to affirm your plea, is that correct?" Marquette County Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Mazzuchi said. "Yes, your honor," defendant Jamie Tasson said. "Now do you then affirm the statements that you made under oath previously at the time of your sentencing?" Mazzuchi said. "Yes, your honor," defendant Jamie Tasson said.
In pleading guilty to embezzlement, one of seven charges, the remaining six charges were dismissed.
Marquette County Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Mazzuchi sentenced Tasson to 6 months in jail, 3 months to be served up front, with 3 additional months deferred, and 18 months of probation.
"I hope this is the beginning of the end, I feel that this has been an arduous journey trying to seek justice for what has happened to my company and all of my employees and others involved," victim Dr. Heidi Johnson O.D. F.C.O.V.D. said.
Tasson has paid back $40,000 to Dr. Johnson, and the remaining amount will be determined at a later hearing.
"Whether she will be able to pay that or not is in question, I certainly am still challenged with the losses that the business has incurred and we'll see what happens with the restitution hearing," Johnson said.
According to Johnson's attorney, a civil suit seeking to recover the stolen funds is pending in Marquette County Circuit Court.
"Honestly by sending her to jail it may make it so I cannot receive my restitution as well as I perhaps could have if she was employed, however I felt the need to bring this criminal to justice to prevent this from happening again," Johnson said.
Tasson is now in Marquette County Jail for the next three months.
