Ishpeming business selling sweatshirts for addiction recovery

ISHPEMING, Mich. (WLUC) - One local business is raising money for addiction recovery.

Martin Sports in Ishpeming will be selling sweatshirts, with a portion of proceeds intended to be given to the Great Lakes Recovery Centers.

The idea began when co-owner Scott Martin lost his sister, Haylee, to addiction.

"Haylee was a pretty popular girl. Everybody seemed to know her, but nobody really wanted to address the elephant in the room, which was her addiction," says Martin. "I think a lot of families struggle with that same thing and they see it as an embarrassment but if you can't talk about it then you can't help the people around you."

The sweatshirts are gray and pink, with down-turned angel wings on the back and "In loving memory of Haylee Martin" written down the spine.

Martin says he hopes the initiative can bring awareness to the issue.

"We just wanna bring a little more awareness out there. You see that with the breast cancer and with autism, and with things that have been a little more mainstream, where it's still a little taboo to talk about drug addiction and we really wanna open up that communication," he says.

Sweatshirts are available in store.
