ISHPEMING, Mich. (WLUC) - Summer is always a slow time for blood donations, but blood stores are now so low the Red Cross recently issued a Blood Emergency.
Donors in Ishpeming did their part during a blood drive Wednesday at the Elk's Lodge.
Blood donations fell short of expectations in June, resulting in more than 24,000 fewer donations than needed nationwide.
All types are in demand, and Red Cross volunteers say having a shortage could cause problems for people who need invasive surgeries. They say your donation can help multiple people.
"For just one donation of blood you can save three lives. So for a small prick of your arm we're able to save three folks lives, and your blood product can go anywhere in the nation. So, where there's a need, that's where we can send the blood," said Red Cross Volunteer Amanda Ernst.
