Ishpeming Senior Center temporary location set to open

ISHPEMING, Mich. (WLUC) - The Ishpeming Senior Center now has a temporary location. Volunteers from Pioneer Kiwanis Thursday afternoon were inside the Phelps Square helping to set up the new center.

They're using what was the cafeteria for the former school. Tables, chairs and temporary office space are in place and staff says full senior services will be available beginning Friday, November 8. The old senior center was closed in October. The Ishpeming Interim City Manager says staff has been very helpful making sure this transition goes smoothly.

"The staff has been phenomenal as far as being able to get through this process and get to where it is and to keep it on track because there's obviously been many hurdles that we've come across and we've taken every one and knocked them down," said Interim City Manger, Steve Snowaert.

The city is applying for a Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) grant for $2.2 million to build a new senior center. That grant deadline is in March. The total cost to build a new senior center is estimated at $2.4 million.
