Ishpeming Rock & Mineral Club hosts unique historical presentation Sunday

ISHPEMING, Mich. (WLUC) - The Ishpeming Rock & Mineral Club held a special presentation at the Cliffs Shaft Mine Museum Sunday.

Joel Peterson presented ‘How to Identify Stone Artifacts and Where to Look for Ancient Campsites.’

Peterson focused on ancient artifacts found during his extensive dives of Teal Lake in Negaunee and Ishpeming.

His fascinating presentation also included a brief history of Ishpeming and its early pioneers. He also shared various unique stone artifacts found while logging portions of northern Marquette County.

Peterson also fielded a number of questions on the subject of ancient civilizations that would have thrived here tens of thousands of years ago.

If you’re intrigued by these topics but missed the presentation, Club President, Steve Maki says the Club meets regularly to discuss similar topics and to look back at Upper Michigan's past.

"On the third Sunday of each month we have a meeting. We always have a presentation on various topics related to rocks, minerals or geology. You can just come for that. You don't have to stay for the business meeting. That's not required. I think people would find it interesting and it's free,” Maki announced.

Sunday's meeting also included a silent auction, refreshments and open discussion.
