UPDATE: Ishpeming graffiti suspects confess to vandalism

UPDATE at 9:00 a.m. Thursday:

Two suspects, accused of vandalizing several Ishpeming businesses and the "Old Ish" statue Saturday morning, have confessed to the graffiti.

Ishpeming police say the boys are 16 and 17 years old and are both from Marquette. The investigation has been turned over to the Marquette County Prosecutor's Office for review. Their names have not been released.

Investigators say both suspects face multiple charges of malicious destruction of property and violation of an executive order.

Police thank the public and Range Telecommunications for their assistance with this investigation. It was Range Telecommunications' video surveillance system that was originally donated for Santa's Workshop that caught the vandalism as it occurred.

The City of Ishpeming Police Department is currently investigating several instances of graffiti.

The incidents happened around 5:00 a.m. Saturday, April 18. Police say suspects spray painted buildings, windows, sidewalks and the 'Old Ish' statue in downtown Ishpeming.

After releasing a request for businesses and others to review security camera footage, police received several tips from the public. Officers have developed a list of suspects and have begun interviewing some of them.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The City of Ishpeming Police Department is currently investigating several instances of graffiti.

Officers believe that the incidents happened at approximately 5:00 a.m. Saturday, according to a press release. The suspects spray painted symbols and obscene language on several downtown businesses. Officers said suspects also painted the face and midsection the "Old Ish" statute red.

The police are still in the process of contacting all of the affected businesses and are asking any business owners in the area with security cameras to review their footage and contact the police department if anything was captured on video.
