ISHPEMING, Mich. (WLUC) - In a surprise move Wednesday night, Ishpeming Mayor and City Council Member Karl Lehmann announced he's stepping down. Toward the end of the regular meeting Wednesday, Lehmann announced would it be his final meeting on the council. He's officially done on the 25th of this month.
Lehmann cited his intention to move into his family home in Ishpeming Township following the recent passing of his father. The City Charter states that council members must live within the city to serve in that role. Lehmann says he leaves the council in good hands.
"The Council is very capable and I'm sure they have somebody in mind to fill my spot, the administration here is top notch so, I'm not concerned," Lehmann said.
An emotional, yet jovial, Lehmann addressed each member of the Council and Staff present at the meeting, thanking them for their service. The council will now have to fill Lehmann's spot. Council Member Mike Tonkin is the city's Mayor Pro Tem.
