UPDATE: Camp intern believed to have drowned after having seizure

FORSYTH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - UPDATE at 4:25 p.m. Thursday:

The Upper Peninsula Bible Camp has released more information on the swimming death of one of their interns.

The camp says 20-year-old Cody Cayer of Delta County was working as a specialized summer intern and had been serving at the camp for a number of years.

According to the camp, on Tuesday evening, a number of summer interns were swimming at a raft in Farmer Lake.

The camp believes that Cody drowned after having a seizure in the water.

Once the other interns discovered that Cody was missing, they began a deep water search while two other interns swam to shore to find help and contact local authorities.

Cody was found in the water and the camp began life-saving efforts.
Forsyth Township Police, EMS, and Fire Department arrived at the scene and transported Cayer to Marquette General Hospital.

Cody died in the hospital later that night.

The camp is moving forward with the rest of their summer programs as anticipated.

The camp says that their staff is holding strong as they deal with the loss of their friend. They are asking for prayers to the Cayer family as well as for the Upper Peninsula Bible Camp.

A professional crisis counselor is at the camp and available for those who in need.

No funeral arrangements have been set at this time.


UPDATE at 9:15 a.m. Thursday:

The Forsyth Township Police Department has released more information about the drowning at the Upper Peninsula Bible Camp.

Police say a 20-year-old man from Delta County drowned around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday. The man was found in the water by camp staff and brought to shore where lifesaving techniques were conducted.

Forsyth Township Police, Fire and EMS took over care once they arrived on scene. The man was taken to UP Health System-Marquette.

Police did not release the man's name, but the Upper Peninsula Bible Camp previously said that Cody Cayer, a summer intern at the camp, died Tuesday.

The Upper Peninsula Bible Camp is located on Farmer Lake.
