MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) - UP Health System – Marquette hospitalist Lisa Long, MD is the only certified Integrative Medicine specialist practicing in the Upper Peninsula, according to the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM).
The Board Certification was recently awarded to Dr. Long after extensive training, including her completion of a fellowship at the oldest Integrative Medicine center in the US, the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, which was established in 1994.
What is integrative medicine? Dr. Long explains, “Integrative medicine combines the best medical practices of the Western world with other globally recognized methodologies, concentrating them under an evidence-based approach."
She says "the idea is to focus on lifestyle modifications, listening to patients and their needs, and honing in on the idiosyncrasies of each patient, each individual. Integrative medicine starts with the crucial relationship between the practitioner and patient as the foundation for the patient’s pathway toward holistic health."
Board certification from the American Board of Integrative Medicine enables successful candidates, such as Dr. Long, to present themselves to the public as qualified medical specialists in the practice of Integrative Medicine.
An official statement from the American Board of Physical Specialties reads, “The American Board of Physician Specialties (ABPS), the official certifying body of the American Association of Physician Specialists, Inc. (AAPS), announced that Lisa M. Long, MD successfully completed all of the requirements for certification in integrative medicine through the American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABOIM), an ABPS Member Board of Certification.”
Hospitalists, like Dr. Long, are dedicated in-patient physician who works exclusively in the hospital setting. So, while patients cannot directly make appointments with Dr. Long to seek treatment, the effects of Dr. Long’s specialized Integrative Medicine approach will be experienced by a broad spectrum of patients receiving care at UP Health System – Marquette.
