NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WLUC) - Christmas may seem like the perfect time to give a family member or friend a new pet. But is giving an animal as a gift a good idea?
Pets are a long term commitment and adopting the wrong animal can mean trouble. The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter (UPAWS), along with many other animal shelters, offer gift certificates, which can be redeemed for animal adoption fees. Pet starter kits are also a great idea for those looking to give the gift of a pet.
UPAWS says picking a pet is a personal experience.
“A pet is a family member and a pretty personal commitment. They're going to be a part of your family,” said Ann Brownell, Community Outreach Coordinator at UPAWS. “Bring that loved one or friend or whoever is receiving that gift back to your local shelter, back to UPAWS, after the holidays. Have some fun and pick out a pet together that way.”
December 20th is UPAWS Home for the Holiday’s adoption event. When mBank will be covering all adoption fees. For more information on the event, visit mBank’s event page at https://bankmbank.com/News-Highlights/mBank-Campaign-to-Support-UPAWS.aspx.
