UPDATE: Two firefighters injured in Portage Township fire that destroyed house, shed

HOUGHTON COUNTY, Mich. (WLUC) - UPDATE: Wednesday, June 12 4:15 p.m:

More details have been released regarding a Portage Township Fire Tuesday afternoon.

A house and storage shed were destroyed in the fire.

According to Hurontown Fire and Rescue the fire was spreading quickly due to high winds and was endangering three other houses and one garage within 30 feet of the fire.

In a press release, Hurontown Fire and Rescue says "Within 5 minutes, our two tankers and rescue arrived on scene and deployed two portable 500 GPM pumps to the Portage Canal for water supply. Two 3000 gallon drop tanks were also deployed and water shuttle operations were established with 2 tankers from Hurontown and 1 tanker from Chassell."

Over 350,000 gallons of water as well as foam were used to extinguish the fire. Crews were on scene for more than 7 hours until all hotspots were cleared.

Two firefighters were treated and released at the scene for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

Hurontown Fire & Rescue were assisted on scene by Houghton Fire Department, Chassell Fire Department, Stanton Township Fire Department, Hancock Fire Department, Mercy EMS, Chassell First Responders, Michigan State Police, Houghton County Sheriff's Department, Michigan Tech Police, American Red Cross, U.S. Coast Guard Station Portage (U.S. Coast Guard Sector Sault Ste Marie), UPPCO, SEMCO.

UPDATE: Tuesday, June 11 10:55 p.m.
A fire destroying a house and storage shed south of Houghton on Tuesday afternoon.

This happened just after 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday in Portage Township.

The Houghton County Sheriff's office says the homeowner was not home and no injuries have been reported.

Deputies say the fire originated in a burn barrel and ignited a nearby wooden fence.

The fire spread to a storage shed, which then ignited a neighboring log home.

The home and storage shed, part of Sheridan Place just off US-41 across from Julie's Motor Inn, suffered severe damages.

Officials are reminding the public to check with the Michigan DNR's Burn Permits Management System prior to burning any debris.

The home and storage shed, part of Sheridan Place just off US-41 across from Julie's Motor Inn, suffered severe damages.

According to witnesses at the scene, the homeowner was not home and there haven't been any injuries reported.
