ISHPEMING TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - Thanks to a story about a boy and his bunny, the Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter received a big grant. It's thanks to the Holiday Wishes grant campaign from the Petco Foundation. The story is from 8-year-old Aspen Ridge Elementary student, Will LeClair.
LeClair has been fascinated by bunnies ever since he was three. However, the timing wasn't right for his family to adopt until recently. LeClair instantly fell in love with this two year old lion head rabbit named Oreo.
UPAWS management says they hope the story encourages others to consider all kinds of animals when looking for pets.
"What we hope people look at it as that it's not always just about cats and dogs, that critters can actually be amazing companion animals and to take a look at what you want in a best friend and maybe that unique relationship that you can create with them as well," said UPAWS Executive Director Kori Tossava.
Thousands of stories were submitted for the grant campaign. LeClair and Oreo's story is one of just 51 that were selected.
