The Healthy Kids Free Vitamin Program is exactly what it sounds like, a program through Good Neighbor Pharmacy that allows free access to children's vitamins ages 2-12.
"Kids as we know are growing, their brains are growing, their bodies are growing and we really need to nourish their bodies and their minds with essential vitamins and nutrients in order for them to be healthy both physically and mentally," said Tyler Jenema, a pharmacist and owner of Peninsula Pharmacy.
Depending on the age of the child, each month, the program offers one to two bottles of a 30 day supply of children’s chewable complete mulit-vitamins.
"The vitamins we offer also has Vitamin D in them which is helpful especially in the UP we don’t get a lot of sunlight so almost every single person is deficient in vitamin D," explained Jenema.
And the process to those free vitamins is fairly simple. An enrollment form just needs to be filled out by the parent and then presented at either the two Peninsula Pharmacy locations.
"There’s really no strings attached, we have families that come in that have several children and we don’t make them prove that they have the kids it’s kind of a loosely ran program," said Jenema.
Valued around $4 a bottle, a family with one 6-year-old could save up to $96 a year through this program.
"It’s important for us to give back to the community when we can," said Jenema. "This is one of the programs that we are really proud of. In the three years that we have been doing this, we have given out thousands of bottles free of charge to the community."
