Gwinn High School athletics honored with 'Safe School Sports' award

GWINN, Mich. (WLUC) - Gwinn High School has been partnered with UP Rehab Services for nearly 30 years, and their efforts together were recognized Friday night.

During halftime of the Modeltowners’ football game against Lake Linden-Hubbell, the school was presented the National Athletic Trainers' Association Safe School Sports Award. The award recognizes schools that prioritize student athletes' safety. U.P. Rehab helps the athletic department provide care, injury prevention, and treatment.

“People in Gwinn take of lot of ownership in their athletics and their student athletes, and they've done everything that they can to make sure that UP Rehab Services and UP Health Systems are included in that community,” said Nikki Maki, certified athletic trainer with UP Rehab Services.

Studies show that schools without athletic trainers suffer twice the amount of injuries as those that have full time trainers.
