Grief counselors are on duty today at the Hancock High School after a 17 year-old student drowned over the weekend.

According to the Houghton City Police, officers were called out Saturday afternoon around 3:15 p.m. to the docks located on E. Lakeshore Drive. The male subject was unconscious at the scene. Bystanders were performing CPR until medical help arrived.

The teen was first transported to UP Health System Portage, UP Health System Marquette, and eventually to Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. According to the Hancock Schools, that’s where he passed away.

Hancock Schools will have grief counselors on hand through Monday, and will assess the situation in the days to come to ensure there is adequate support personnel for students and staff. They wish to thank the community which has been very responsive and sensitive towards the family and friends of the deceased student.

Houghton City Police will release further information as their investigation warrants.
