GRAND MARAIS, Mich. (WLUC) - Lake Superior Magazine has chosen its 2018 photo winners, and the grand prize winner happens to be from Upper Michigan.
Gary McCormick's photo of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore was chosen out of 900 entries for the magazine's annual contest. Each contestant could submit up to ten photos in five different categories - Lake/Landscape, People/Humor, Nature, Artsy/Altered, and Maritime.
McCormick's winning photograph was submitted under the Lake/Landscape category, giving him $200, a year's subscription to Lake Superior Magazine, and a Lake Superior calendar.
“I do a lot of backpacking and I was walking the shoreline waiting for the sun to go down, expecting a sunset picture, and I noticed the waves - how they were breaking on the old shipwreck - and I thought, 'Oh, that could be an interesting shot,' so I sat there and watched for the sunset and I noticed how the waves were breaking. I took several shots of the waves breaking on the shipwreck, and this one is the one I chose, it was my favorite one. I thought, 'Yea, this could be a good picture,'" explains Gary McCormick.
The Grand Marais resident has been taking photos for 50 years, and has even won other photography contests.
"It's always exciting to find out that yours was chosen over 900 other entries. I was kind of surprised, but it made me pretty happy," McCormick says.
